The global artificial intelligence landscape witnessed a significant development this week as India based Sarvam AI demonstrated superior performance in optical character recognition technology. This achievement positions the Bengaluru startup alongside established international technology leaders and underscores India’s growing capabilities in advanced AI development.
Breakthrough Performance in Document Processing
Sarvam AI’s OCR solution, branded as Sarvam Vision, recorded an impressive 84.3% accuracy rate on the olmOCR-Bench evaluation framework. This performance exceeded results from several prominent AI systems, including Google’s Gemini 3 Pro and DeepSeek OCR v2. The system demonstrated particular proficiency in handling complex document layouts, technical tables, and mathematical formulas—areas where conventional OCR technologies frequently encounter difficulties.
Beyond raw accuracy metrics, Sarvam Vision addresses a critical gap in AI technology by supporting all 22 officially recognized Indian languages. This multilingual capability represents a strategic advantage in markets where linguistic diversity presents substantial technical challenges for document digitization and data processing.
Strategic Vision and Leadership
The company was established in 2023 through the partnership of Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, both bringing complementary expertise to the venture. Raghavan’s background includes instrumental work on India’s Aadhaar identity system and two decades of experience in Electronic Design Automation. Kumar contributed extensive research experience through his leadership of AI4Bharat, a research initiative focused on developing AI solutions for Indian languages.
This combination of large scale infrastructure expertise and specialized AI research has enabled Sarvam AI to secure substantial backing, including a $41 million Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Additional investment came from Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures, reflecting strong investor confidence in the company’s technical approach and market positioning.
Broader Implications for India’s Technology Sector
The Indian government has recognized Sarvam AI’s potential by selecting the company to develop the nation’s first sovereign large language model under the IndiaAI Mission initiative. This collaboration places India among a select group of countries developing indigenous foundation AI systems, alongside the United States and China.
The practical applications for Sarvam AI’s technology extend across multiple sectors requiring efficient multilingual document processing. Government digitization programs, banking operations, judicial record management, and healthcare documentation all stand to benefit from improved OCR accuracy in regional languages. By making its Document Intelligence API available at no cost through February 2026, the company is encouraging widespread adoption and demonstrating confidence in its technological capabilities.
This development illustrates how targeted innovation addressing specific regional requirements can yield competitive advantages even against well resourced global competitors.
