Cursor Unveils “Cursor Start,” Its First Country-Specific Pricing Tier at ₹649 a Month, Deepening Investment in India’s Developer Ecosystem

AI coding startup Cursor introduced a new subscription plan called “Cursor Start” on Monday, priced at ₹649 per month exclusively for users in India. The launch, coming weeks before Cursor’s expected acquisition by SpaceX closes, marks the company’s first attempt at country specific pricing as it targets one of the world’s largest developer markets.

Why India, Why Now

India has become Cursor’s third largest market globally, with the highest concentration of power users among all regions. The company’s user base in the country has more than tripled over the past year. Combined with India’s deep pool of software engineering talent, executives say the market presented a natural opportunity to adjust pricing and drive scale.

What Cursor Start Offers

The plan includes access to Cursor’s Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, along with cloud agents, the iOS app, Model Context Protocol support, hooks, and skills. However, it excludes several features reserved for Pro subscribers, including frontier models from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK. Payments are accepted via credit and debit cards as well as India’s Unified Payments Interface.

Why This Matters

Cursor’s move reflects a broader trend among AI companies competing for developer loyalty in high-growth markets. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have introduced India-specific plans over the past year, and OpenAI’s sub-$5 ChatGPT Go preceded its expansion to other regions. For developers, localized pricing lowers barriers to accessing advanced AI coding tools. For the industry, it signals intensifying competition in emerging markets.

What’s Next

Cursor is simultaneously expanding its India operations, including new sales hires, a government affairs office, and technical support staff across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Once the SpaceX acquisition closes—expected in Q3 2026—Starlink’s existing India presence could further accelerate Cursor’s growth by easing operational barriers.

Quick Guide: What Is Cursor Start?

Cursor Start is a localized, lower cost subscription tier from Cursor, an AI coding assistant company, designed specifically for individual developers in India. Priced at ₹649 per month, it sits below Cursor’s standard $20 Pro plan and offers essential AI coding features without frontier-model access. It suits developers who need more capacity than the free tier but don’t require Cursor’s full premium toolset. The plan is restricted to individual users physically located in India, with measures in place to prevent VPN based access from other regions.
