NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon, whose paternal family hails from Ottapalam in Kerala’s Palakkad district, launched aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 14, 2026, alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. The mission, backed by NASA and Roscosmos, will keep Menon aboard the International Space Station for approximately eight months, where he will conduct research critical to future long duration human spaceflight.
A Journey Years in the Making
Menon’s path to space combined medicine, engineering, and military service. He studied neurobiology at Harvard, earned a master’s in mechanical engineering and a medical degree from Stanford, and later specialized in emergency and aerospace medicine. He served as SpaceX’s first flight surgeon starting in 2018 and supported NASA missions from 2014 onward. NASA selected him as an astronaut candidate in December 2021, and he completed his two year training program in January 2024, formally earning his place in the astronaut corps.
Why This Mission Matters
Menon’s research agenda addresses practical challenges of extended spaceflight. He will study blood circulation changes in microgravity, test technology to produce intravenous fluids from the ISS’s water supply, and use AI-assisted ultrasound diagnostics designed to reduce astronauts’ dependence on ground-based medical support. He will also help advance in-space semiconductor crystal production—research with applications for computing and medical devices on Earth. These experiments directly inform preparations for future Moon and Mars missions.
A Family and Regional Milestone
Menon’s wife, Anna Menon, is a SpaceX engineer who flew on the 2024 Polaris Dawn mission, making them a rare dual astronaut family. Palakkad district now has ties to three astronauts, including Air Commodore Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, one of India’s Gaganyaan astronaut designates—cementing the region’s growing connection to global space exploration.
