WhatsApp has commenced the rollout of username reservations across its worldwide user base, a move that signals one of the most notable shifts in how identity functions on the platform since its inception. This development precedes a broader feature launch expected later in the year, through which users will be able to initiate conversations using a chosen username rather than relying solely on their phone number.
The Rationale Behind the Change
According to the company, the decision stems from a simple observation: sharing a phone number with someone unfamiliar, be it a new acquaintance, colleague, or someone met socially, can feel like an unexpectedly significant disclosure, given how deeply a number is woven into a person’s broader digital identity. With a user base exceeding three billion, the likelihood of overlapping names is considerable, prompting WhatsApp to open reservations well in advance so individuals have a fair opportunity to claim a username that suits them.
What the Reservation Process Involves
At this stage, only the reservation mechanism is active; the ability to actually use usernames for messaging will not be enabled until the wider rollout takes effect later this year. To reserve a username, users need to update to the latest version of the app and navigate to Settings, then Account, then Username. Names may range from three to thirty five characters, subject to standard content guidelines. The system checks availability in real time and offers alternative suggestions if a preferred name is already taken. Notably, WhatsApp has pre-reserved usernames for public figures and celebrities, meaning ordinary users sharing such names will need to select a variation. Separately, creators, small businesses, and organizations seeking a consistent online identity have been given the option to claim a username matching their existing Instagram or Facebook handle.

A Step Toward Greater Privacy
WhatsApp has framed this update primarily as a privacy enhancement. There will be no searchable directory or suggestion system, meaning a user’s exact username must be known in advance for someone to initiate contact. Once fully implemented, phone numbers will remain hidden from new contacts who message via username. To further strengthen this safeguard, the company is introducing an optional “username key,” a PIN-like credential that prevents strangers from reaching a user even if the username itself becomes publicly known.

The complete feature is anticipated to roll out gradually over the coming months, with in-app notifications informing users once it becomes available in their respective regions. For now, the opportunity to secure a preferred username represents an early and meaningful step in this transition toward a more private, number independent messaging experience.
