IIT Madras Achieves Quantum Breakthrough with India’s First Silicon Photonics-Based Random Number Generator, Seals ₹1 Crore Commercial Partnership

IIT Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has marked a significant achievement in quantum technology by successfully developing and licensing India’s first indigenous silicon photonics based quantum random number generator (QRNG). The Technology Transfer Office signed a ₹1 crore licensing agreement on Monday, August 18, 2025, with Indrarka Quantum Technologies Pvt. Ltd. for the commercial deployment of this Silicon Photonic QRNG.

The groundbreaking technology was developed at IIT Madras’ Centre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuits and Systems (CPPICS), representing a crucial advancement in India’s quantum computing capabilities. Silicon photonics technology enables the creation of true random numbers essential for quantum cryptography and secure communications, positioning this innovation as a cornerstone for national cybersecurity infrastructure.

Strategic Deployment in Defense and Security Applications

The practical applications of this technology have already been demonstrated through strategic deployments. A prototype QRNG module was earlier delivered to DRDO’s Young Scientist Laboratory – Quantum Technologies, while an advanced version has been deployed at the Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS) for quantum security applications.

IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti emphasized the significance of this development, noting that “Silicon photonics is an emerging area with a strong interface with Quantum Technologies, and Random number generation is a critical building block for secure computing and communication.”

Commercial Partnership Drives Indigenous Innovation

This licensing agreement represents more than just a commercial transaction; it exemplifies the successful transformation of academic research into market ready technology. The development highlights the technology’s strategic value and potential to advance India’s quantum innovation ecosystem.

The partnership between IIT Madras and Indrarka Quantum Technologies demonstrates India’s growing capabilities in indigenous quantum technology development, supporting the nation’s strategic objectives in achieving technological self reliance. This milestone positions India as a significant player in the global quantum technology landscape while addressing critical national security requirements through homegrown innovation.
