ChatGPT Enables In Platform Purchasing with Etsy and Shopify Merchants via New Open Source Commerce Standard

ChatGPT

OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking development in artificial intelligence driven retail, introducing Instant Checkout functionality within ChatGPT alongside the open source Agentic Commerce Protocol. This strategic initiative, developed in collaboration with Stripe, represents a fundamental shift in how consumers interact with e-commerce platforms.

Seamless Shopping Experience

The newly launched Instant Checkout feature enables U.S. users across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free tiers to complete purchases directly within their conversational interface. Currently, users can buy from U.S. Etsy sellers, with plans to incorporate over one million Shopify merchants, including prominent brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori in the near future. This integration eliminates the traditional need to navigate away from the chat environment, streamlining the entire purchasing process.

When users pose shopping-related queries, ChatGPT presents relevant product options based purely on organic search results, without sponsored content influencing the rankings. For items supporting Instant Checkout, consumers can complete their transaction with minimal steps, confirming order details, shipping information, and payment preferences without interruption.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol

At the foundation of this innovation lies the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open source framework designed to facilitate collaboration between artificial intelligence agents, merchants, and consumers. Co-developed with Stripe and leading merchant partners, this protocol addresses critical requirements for modern digital commerce.

The framework maintains merchant autonomy throughout the transaction lifecycle, ensuring businesses retain complete control over payment processing, fulfillment operations, customer service, and relationship management. Importantly, merchants function as the official merchant of record, preserving their existing operational structures.

Integration has been simplified substantially, with Stripe-enabled merchants able to activate agentic payment capabilities through minimal code implementation. Businesses utilizing alternative payment processors can participate through Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or by adopting the Delegated Payments Specification within the protocol.

Built on Trust

Security and user control remain paramount in this new commerce model. Users explicitly authorize each transaction step, with encrypted payment tokens restricted to specific amounts and designated merchants. Data sharing adheres to strict minimization principles, transmitting only essential information required for order completion.

This launch establishes a foundation for the evolving landscape of AI-mediated commerce, where intelligent agents facilitate seamless connections between consumers seeking products and businesses providing them.
