In a significant stride towards indigenous defence capability, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have jointly accomplished a major milestone with the successful completion of four in-flight release trials of the Air Droppable Container ‘ADC-150’. The trials were conducted from the P-8I maritime patrol aircraft off the coast of Goa between February 21 and March 1, 2026, under different extreme release conditions marking a pivotal achievement in India’s pursuit of self reliance in defence technology.
What is the ADC-150?
The ADC-150 is an indigenously designed and developed air droppable container engineered to deliver a payload of up to 150 kg to naval vessels operating in blue sea environments, far from the Indian coastline. The system is purpose built to provide rapid logistical support to ships under distress enabling the timely delivery of critical stores, essential equipment, and life saving medical assistance without requiring vessels to divert from their operational areas or return to port. This capability holds particular strategic value given the Indian Navy’s expanding presence across the Indian Ocean Region.
A Collaborative Indigenous Achievement
The development of the ADC-150 reflects a robust multi laboratory effort within the DRDO ecosystem. The Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, served as the nodal laboratory overseeing the programme. The Aerial Delivery Research & Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, was responsible for designing and developing the parachute system integral to the container’s air drop functionality. The Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), Bengaluru, provided the essential flight clearance and certification, while the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, extended critical instrumentation support during the trials.
Strategic and Operational Significance
The induction of the ADC-150 into the Indian Navy is expected in the near future, following the successful conclusion of all developmental flight trials. Its integration with the P-8I already a cornerstone of India’s long range maritime surveillance substantially expands the aircraft’s operational utility beyond reconnaissance and anti submarine warfare into active logistical and humanitarian support roles.
At a broader level, the ADC-150 programme underscores India’s accelerating momentum under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The ability to develop, qualify, and field a system of this nature within a short timeframe is a testament to the growing depth and maturity of India’s indigenous defence industrial ecosystem and a clear signal of the nation’s resolve to reduce strategic dependencies in critical maritime domains.
