The Central government’s recent approval of four semiconductor manufacturing projects marks a pivotal advancement in India’s semiconductor self reliance initiative. These projects, with a combined investment value of ₹4,600 crore, constitute a substantial expansion of the country’s domestic chip manufacturing infrastructure across multiple states.

Strategic Geographic Distribution

The approved projects demonstrate a well planned approach to developing semiconductor manufacturing hubs across different regions. Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, emerges as a focal point with two facilities – SiCSem Pvt Ltd and 3D Glass Solutions Inc. establishing operations in the city. Meanwhile, Continental Device India Pvt Ltd will expand its existing capabilities in Mohali, Punjab, and Advanced System in Package Technologies will establish new manufacturing capacity in Andhra Pradesh.

This geographic diversification reflects the government’s commitment to creating multiple centers of excellence rather than concentrating all activities in a single location. Such distribution ensures better risk management, optimal resource utilization, and broader regional economic development.

Economic Impact and Employment Generation

The financial implications of these approvals extend far beyond the immediate ₹4,600 crore investment. With these four new facilities, India now boasts ten approved semiconductor manufacturing units, pushing total projected investments in the sector to an impressive ₹1.6 lakh crore across six states. This represents a substantial commitment to building domestic manufacturing capabilities in one of the world’s most critical technology sectors.

The employment potential is equally promising, with these four projects alone expected to create 2,034 skilled professional positions. These roles will primarily focus on high value manufacturing and technical functions, contributing to India’s goal of developing a skilled workforce in advanced technology sectors.

Building Technological Independence

These developments align with India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on semiconductor imports while establishing the country as a significant player in global chip manufacturing. The semiconductor industry’s strategic importance became particularly evident during recent global supply chain disruptions, highlighting the need for domestic production capabilities.

The approved companies represent diverse aspects of semiconductor manufacturing, from specialized silicon carbide production to advanced packaging solutions. This variety indicates efforts to build a comprehensive ecosystem capable of addressing different segments of the semiconductor value chain.

Looking Forward

As India progresses toward its semiconductor manufacturing goals, these approvals signal strong governmental commitment and private sector confidence in the country’s potential. The combination of policy support, strategic investments, and skilled workforce development positions India to become a significant contributor to global semiconductor supply chains while ensuring technological security for its growing digital economy.
