In a significant boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, Kochi based marine robotics startup EyeROV has been awarded a ₹47 crore contract by the Indian Navy. This landmark agreement involves the supply of advanced underwater remotely operated vehicles (UWROVs), marking a pivotal moment for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
Advancing Maritime Defence Capabilities
The contract underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing its underwater surveillance and reconnaissance operations through domestically developed technology. EyeROV’s flagship product, the TROUT, has been specifically engineered to operate at depths reaching 300 metres, making it suitable for diverse maritime applications. The system’s versatility extends beyond defence requirements, serving commercial purposes as well.
What distinguishes EyeROV’s technology is its proven track record in challenging operational environments. The company’s underwater drones have undergone rigorous testing in some of the world’s most demanding conditions, including turbulent deep sea environments and the harsh Antarctic region. This extensive field validation demonstrates the robustness and reliability of the indigenous technology.
Eight Years of Innovation and Growth
Since its establishment in 2016, EyeROV has demonstrated remarkable progress in the marine robotics sector. The company has successfully executed over 100 deployments spanning multiple geographical regions, including India, West Asia, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. This international footprint reflects the global competitiveness of Indian deep tech innovation.
The startup’s client portfolio includes prestigious institutions such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Indian Coast Guard, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research. These partnerships highlight the trust placed in EyeROV’s technological capabilities by leading defence and research organizations.
In 2024, the company strengthened its financial position by raising $1.2 million in a Pre Series A funding round from Unicorn India Ventures. Earlier recognition includes being named among India’s top five defence tech companies and receiving the National Startup Award in 2022.
Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat
This contract represents more than a commercial transaction; it embodies India’s strategic vision for self reliance in critical defence technologies. EyeROV’s complete product range, including the ROVs TUNA and TROUT, along with the unmanned surface vessel iBoat Alpha, has been entirely developed within India. This achievement aligns seamlessly with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, demonstrating that Indian startups possess the capability to deliver world class defence solutions that meet rigorous operational standards.
