The Indian government has issued a definitive statement regarding the status of TikTok’s ban in the country, putting to rest speculation that emerged following reports of users briefly accessing the platform’s website. On Friday, August 23, 2025, government sources from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology categorically denied any policy reversal concerning the Chinese owned video streaming application.
Official Government Position
The clarification came after several users reported gaining temporary access to TikTok’s website, sparking widespread speculation about a potential lifting of the ban. However, government sources were quick to address these claims, stating unequivocally that “Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement/news is false and misleading.”
This swift response underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining its existing digital policy framework regarding Chinese applications, which has been in place since 2020.
Background Context
India implemented its comprehensive ban on Chinese mobile applications in June 2020, affecting 59 platforms including TikTok, WeChat, and Helo. This decisive action followed the Galwan Valley border clashes between Indian and Chinese forces, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions between the two nations.
The ban was justified on grounds of national security, with intelligence agencies raising concerns about data collection practices and potential information sharing with foreign entities. The government stated that these applications were engaged in activities “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order.”
Current Status and Implications
Despite the brief website accessibility reported by some users, TikTok’s mobile application remains unavailable on official app stores in India. Additionally, users who accessed the website were unable to log in or view content, indicating that no functional restoration occurred.
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has confirmed its continued compliance with the Indian government’s directive, emphasizing that no official restoration of services has taken place.
This incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Chinese technology platforms in India and reinforces the government’s unwavering stance on digital sovereignty and national security concerns.
