The Indian biotech sector continues to witness innovative developments, with Cellarim Labs emerging as a notable player in sustainable beauty ingredient production. The startup has recently secured Rs 6 crore in seed funding, marking a significant milestone in its journey to revolutionize the personal care industry through advanced biomanufacturing techniques.
Investment Details and Strategic Backing
The funding round attracted prominent investors, with 3i Partners and Venture Catalysts serving as lead investors. The round also witnessed participation from Momentum Capital, alongside individual investors Jashan Bhumkar and Gayathri Kuppendra Reddy, among others. This diverse investor base reflects growing confidence in biotechnology solutions for the beauty and personal care sector.
Pioneering Cell-Free Biomanufacturing
Founded in 2023 by entrepreneurs Hitesh Rafalia and Nisa Mehreen, Cellarim Labs has positioned itself at the intersection of biotechnology and sustainable manufacturing. The company’s core innovation lies in its cell free biomanufacturing platform, which represents a departure from conventional production methods. Rather than relying on traditional fermentation or chemical synthesis, Cellarim Labs employs an enzyme powered system that transforms renewable bio waste into premium beauty ingredients.
This approach addresses multiple industry challenges simultaneously. It offers enhanced purity and consistency while maintaining environmental sustainability—a combination increasingly demanded by conscious consumers and forward thinking brands.
Strategic Deployment of Capital
The freshly raised capital will be channeled into several strategic initiatives. Primary focus areas include establishing a pilot scale biomanufacturing facility, which will serve as the foundation for scaling operations. The company also plans to accelerate commercial production of NeuHyal, its flagship hyaluronic acid product range spanning molecular weights from 10 kDa to 5000 kDa. Remarkably, this product was developed within a single year, demonstrating the efficiency of the company’s platform.
Additionally, funds will support expansion of business to business ingredient supply partnerships with cosmetic brands. The company’s AI-driven biofoundry will also receive investment, enabling partner brands to rapidly design, test, and manufacture novel bioactive molecules with significantly reduced development timelines.
Industry Implications
The beauty and personal care industry faces mounting pressure to adopt sustainable practices without compromising product quality. Cellarim Labs’ technology offers a viable solution by providing traceable, high purity ingredients produced through environmentally conscious methods. As consumer awareness grows and regulatory standards tighten, such innovations are likely to become increasingly central to the industry’s evolution.
With this funding secured, Cellarim Labs is well positioned to scale its operations and establish itself as a significant contributor to the future of sustainable beauty ingredient manufacturing.
