Biotech Startup BacAlt Biosciences Closes Rs 18 Crore Investment to Scale Bio-Based Polymer Production

BacAlt Biosciences

The biotechnology sector continues to attract significant investment as companies develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges. BacAlt Biosciences, a Bengaluru based startup, recently announced the successful completion of its funding round, raising Rs 18 crore from prominent investors including Avaana Capital and Lubrizol InnoVentures.

Addressing Critical Environmental Challenges

BacAlt Biosciences has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing by developing bio based alternatives to conventional petrochemical ingredients. The company’s core innovation lies in its proprietary fermentation technology, which transforms agricultural waste into high performance biopolymers. This approach addresses two pressing environmental concerns: waste management in agriculture and the proliferation of microplastics in consumer products.

The significance of BacAlt’s mission becomes apparent when considering that approximately 87% of leading consumer products contain microplastics in their formulations. Rather than focusing solely on packaging solutions, the company targets the fundamental composition of products across multiple industries, including personal care, home care, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.

Strategic Investment and Growth Plans

The funding round was led by Avaana Capital, an early stage investment firm with a focus on sustainability driven ventures. Lubrizol InnoVentures, representing the innovation division of global specialty chemicals provider Lubrizol, also participated in the investment. This partnership brings both financial resources and industry expertise to accelerate BacAlt’s development trajectory.

The raised capital will support several key initiatives: expanding research and development capabilities, establishing pilot production facilities, scaling the team, and preparing for market expansion. The company has outlined plans for commercial launch in June 2026, marking a critical milestone in its journey from laboratory innovation to market ready solutions.

Future Outlook

Founded by entrepreneurs Shruti Kutmutia and Pranav Nair, BacAlt Biosciences represents the growing convergence of biotechnology and environmental sustainability. The company’s circular economy approach, utilizing agricultural waste streams to create valuable industrial inputs, demonstrates potential for scalable impact across multiple sectors.

As consumer awareness of environmental issues continues to grow, companies like BacAlt are well positioned to meet increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to traditional chemical ingredients.
