Reliance Retail Expands Beauty Portfolio with Acquisition of Himalayan Wellness Brand Pahadi Local

Reliance Retail

Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL) has announced the acquisition of Pahadi Local, a homegrown beauty and wellness brand, from Pahadi Goodness Private Limited. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition signals a deliberate and strategic expansion of Reliance Retail’s growing consumer brand portfolio into the natural and clean beauty segment.

About Pahadi Local

Founded in 2018, Pahadi Local has carved a distinctive niche in India’s personal care market by drawing on the rich wellness traditions of the Himalayas. The brand specialises in skincare and wellness products formulated using ethically sourced Himalayan ingredients, with its hero ingredient being Gutti Ka Tel – a prized Apricot Kernel Oil native to Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. This commitment to indigenous sourcing earned the brand notable recognition, including acknowledgment from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its contribution to local enterprise and heritage preservation.

Beyond its product offerings, Pahadi Local has built a socially conscious identity. The brand works in close collaboration with women led self help groups across Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, supporting livelihoods while contributing to healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability in the region. This combination of high efficacy formulations and purposeful community engagement has cultivated strong consumer loyalty and industry credibility.

Strategic Significance for Reliance Retail

The acquisition is consistent with Reliance Retail’s broader ambition to become India’s dominant force in the beauty and personal care sector. In 2023, the conglomerate launched Tira, its omnichannel beauty retail platform, positioning itself as a direct challenger to established players like Nykaa. The addition of Pahadi Local now deepens its portfolio with an authentic, ingredient led brand that resonates with the rapidly growing demand for clean, natural, and sustainably sourced products.

Isha Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited, stated that the company intends to scale Pahadi Local through its expansive retail and digital infrastructure, while preserving the brand’s core identity, storytelling, and sourcing integrity. Notably, the founding team of Pahadi Local will continue to lead the brand’s creative direction and product development, ensuring philosophical continuity post acquisition.

A Broader Industry Shift

This deal arrives at a pivotal moment for Indian beauty and wellness. The same week saw The Estée Lauder Companies announce an agreement to fully acquire Forest Essentials, pending regulatory approvals, while Ayurvedic haircare brand Indē Wild entered Sephora US collectively reflecting a surging global appetite for Indian heritage beauty brands.

With an omnichannel network spanning nearly 20,000 stores and a registered customer base exceeding 378 million, Reliance Retail is exceptionally positioned to scale Pahadi Local from a beloved niche brand into a mainstream household name. The acquisition is not merely a business transaction, it represents a broader validation of India’s indigenous wellness traditions on a global stage.
