Meta Pilots Instagram Plus, a Low-Cost Premium Tier Designed for Everyday Instagram Users

Meta tests Instagram Plus — a low-cost subscription for regular users, offering exclusive Stories tools and audience controls.

Meta is expanding its monetisation strategy beyond creators and advertisers. The company has begun testing Instagram Plus — a paid subscription tier designed not for influencers or businesses, but for the platform’s ordinary, everyday users. The move signals a notable shift in how Meta envisions generating revenue from its flagship photo sharing application.

A Subscription Built Around Stories

The features bundled into Instagram Plus are centred primarily on Stories, one of Instagram’s most frequently used formats. Rather than introducing capabilities that alter the core experience, the subscription enhances existing tools in ways that appeal to habitual users who invest meaningfully in how they share and track content.

Among the notable inclusions is the ability to view another user’s Story anonymously, without appearing in their viewer list. Subscribers can also access rewatch data for their own Stories, create multiple audience groups beyond the single Close Friends list, and search their viewer list to locate specific accounts. Additional tools allow users to extend a Story’s visibility by an extra 24 hours, spotlight one Story per week to bring it to the front of followers’ Stories trays, and send an animated Superlike on others’ Stories.

Selective Rollout and Accessible Pricing

Meta has not formally announced the subscription, though reports indicate active testing in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. Pricing varies by market but remains modest — ranging from approximately $1.07 to $2.20 USD per month depending on the country. This positioning suggests that the company views Instagram Plus as an accessible enhancement rather than a comprehensive premium upgrade.

The offering is distinct from Meta Verified, the company’s existing paid product aimed at creators and businesses seeking verification badges and impersonation protections. Instagram Plus targets a considerably broader audience — the everyday user who wishes to engage more intentionally with the platform’s existing features.

A Measured but Meaningful Shift

The subscription economy in social media has clear precedent. Snapchat’s premium tier, Snapchat+, which starts at $3.99 per month, has surpassed 25 million subscribers, demonstrating that users are willing to pay for exclusive features on platforms they already use daily.

Whether Instagram Plus resonates beyond its test markets will depend on Meta’s ability to balance perceived value against growing user resistance to subscription fatigue. For now, the company has confirmed it intends to continue testing the offering before any wider rollout is considered.
