The artificial intelligence industry is witnessing a significant shift in semiconductor strategy, as Alphabet’s Google reportedly enters discussions with Marvell Technology to co-develop two new chips designed to enhance the efficiency of AI model operations. This development signals Google’s deepening commitment to building a robust, proprietary silicon ecosystem capable of competing with Nvidia’s dominant position in the AI hardware market.
The Chips in Focus
At the heart of this collaboration are two distinct components. The first is a memory processing unit, engineered to work in tandem with Google’s existing Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) infrastructure. Memory bandwidth has long been a critical bottleneck in large-scale AI model inference, and a dedicated memory chip could meaningfully address this limitation. The second is an entirely new TPU, purpose built for running AI models at scale — a workload that is growing exponentially as AI-powered products become mainstream across industries.
Google aims to finalise the design of the memory processing unit by 2027, after which it will proceed to test production — indicating that commercial deployment remains a few years away, but that foundational groundwork is actively underway.
A Calculated Move Against Nvidia
This initiative is not happening in isolation. Google has been steadily expanding its semiconductor partnerships, working alongside industry players such as Intel and Broadcom to strengthen its chip design and manufacturing capabilities. Adding Marvell — a company with proven expertise in developing custom silicon for major cloud providers — brings considerable engineering depth to Google’s accelerator ambitions.
The strategic intent is clear: reduce dependence on Nvidia’s GPUs while positioning TPUs as a viable alternative for cloud customers. Google’s cloud revenue has already been benefiting from growing TPU adoption, and a more capable, inference-optimised chip could further accelerate that trajectory. Notably, Nvidia itself is not standing still — the company is actively developing new AI inference chips leveraging technology from Groq, meaning competition in this space is intensifying on multiple fronts.
What This Means for the Industry
The broader implications extend well beyond Google. As hyperscalers invest heavily in custom silicon, the AI chip market is becoming increasingly competitive. Google’s first quarter earnings, expected on April 29, will be closely watched for signals regarding its AI investment pace, cloud performance, and how aggressively it plans to compete in the semiconductor space.
