India’s beverage retail sector has long been characterised by fragmentation, inconsistency, and the absence of a scalable, organised player. Basil Health, a Delhi based fresh beverage startup, is setting out to change that narrative. The company has successfully closed a $1.5 million Pre-Series A funding round, marking a pivotal milestone in its mission to build a technology first beverage retail network across the country.
The Funding Round
The round was led by Whiteboard Capital, Brigade REAP, and the consumer focused Barbershop Fund, with participation from angel investors including Deep Bajaj and Siddharth Kothari. The capital infusion reflects growing institutional confidence in the convergence of retail automation, food technology, and evolving urban consumer preferences. The fresh capital will be deployed towards city expansion, supply chain strengthening, brand building, and team growth.
The Company and Its Vision
Founded in 2023 by Harshita Kejriwal, Akshay Chaudhari, and Karan Dwivedi, Basil Health operates a beverage retail network through compact kiosks and automated beverage machines, leveraging in house IoT-enabled technology. The company was built on the premise that Indian consumers deserve consistent access to fresh, preservative free, café quality beverages at scale.
At the heart of its operations is proprietary cold beverage automation technology that blends fresh ingredients directly in the cup upon each order, while enabling real-time monitoring of quality and inventory across all locations – a capability that has historically been absent from this segment.
Retail Format and Traction
Basil’s retail strategy combines compact 50 sq. ft. kiosks with 8 sq. ft. plug and play automated beverage machines that can be installed inside offices, hospitals, universities, and malls. This dual format approach reduces capital expenditure and enables faster rollout compared to conventional café chains.
The startup currently operates more than 70 touchpoints across Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Chandigarh, and plans to scale to 1,000 touchpoints within the next three years.
Conclusion
While several food categories already have dominant national chains, the fresh beverage segment still lacks a scaled national brand – a gap Basil aims to fill. With verified traction, a defensible technology advantage, and a clear expansion roadmap, Basil Health is well positioned to emerge as a defining name in India’s organised fresh beverage market.
