In a defining moment for the artificial intelligence industry, Anthropic has announced a significant expansion of its existing partnership with technology giants Google and Broadcom. The agreement grants Anthropic access to 3.5 gigawatts of next generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) capacity, with full operational deployment expected to commence in 2027. This development represents the company’s most ambitious infrastructure commitment to date and signals a broader strategic transformation in how leading AI organisations are approaching computational resources.
A Strategic Shift in Compute Architecture
At the heart of this agreement lies a deliberate architectural pivot. Rather than continuing to rely heavily on conventional Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), Anthropic is moving toward custom silicon in the form of Google’s TPUs. This transition affords the company greater autonomy over its compute stack, reducing dependence on the broader GPU supply chain while enabling more tailored, efficient processing suited to the demands of large scale AI model training and inference.
According to a disclosure in Broadcom’s SEC filing, the 3.5-gigawatt capacity allocation is contingent upon Anthropic’s continued commercial success. Notably, Broadcom has also reportedly begun collaborating with OpenAI on custom silicon development, suggesting a wider industry shift toward purpose built AI processors, though full details of that arrangement remain undisclosed.
Unprecedented Commercial Growth
The timing of this infrastructure expansion aligns closely with a period of extraordinary financial growth for Anthropic. The company’s annualised revenue has risen sharply from $9 billion at the close of 2025 to over $30 billion, a trajectory that has elevated its post money valuation to $380 billion.
Equally notable is the acceleration in enterprise adoption. During Anthropic’s Series G fundraising in February 2026, approximately 500 businesses were paying in excess of $1 million annually for access to Claude. That figure has since doubled to over 1,000 customers in fewer than two months — a pace of growth that few technology companies at this scale have achieved.
Claude Code, Anthropic’s specialised coding and agentic tool, has emerged as a primary catalyst for this commercial momentum, demonstrating strong demand among enterprise developers and technical teams globally.
Looking Ahead
As Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao noted, the company is building the infrastructure necessary to sustain exponential growth while simultaneously advancing the frontier of AI capability. With multi gigawatt compute secured and revenue compounding at a remarkable rate, Anthropic appears well-positioned to intensify its role as a central force in the next chapter of artificial intelligence development.
