RBI Boosts UPI Lite: Increased Offline Digital Payment Limits Announced

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has significantly enhanced the transaction limits for UPI Lite, making digital payments more convenient for users across the country. In a circular released on December 04, 2024, the central bank announced a substantial increase in offline digital payment capabilities.

Previously, UPI Lite was restricted to transactions of ₹500 per transaction, with a total instrument limit of ₹2,000. The new guidelines dramatically expand these limits, allowing users to:

  • Conduct single transactions up to ₹1,000
  • Maintain a total balance of up to ₹5,000 on their UPI Lite instrument

This amendment comes directly from the RBI’s Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies issued on October 09, 2024. The circular, signed by Chief General Manager Gunveer Singh, is issued under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act of 2007 and takes immediate effect.

The move is expected to provide greater flexibility for small-value digital transactions, particularly benefiting users in areas with intermittent internet connectivity. By increasing the offline payment limits, the RBI continues to support the digital payment ecosystem and promote financial inclusion.

Banks and payment system operators have been advised to implement these new limits immediately, marking another significant step in India’s digital payment transformation.
