In a landmark development for India’s mobility landscape, Uber has entered into a strategic partnership with AbhiBus – the bus ticketing arm of travel platform ixigo to offer intercity bus booking services across the country. This collaboration, live nationwide since March 6, 2026, represents a defining moment not just for Indian commuters, but for Uber as a global organisation, as it marks the company’s first ever foray into the bus segment anywhere in the world.
A Market Ripe for Disruption
India’s intercity travel market is valued at approximately $13 billion, with bus services alone accounting for $6–8 billion of that figure. Despite its enormous scale, the sector remains largely unorganised with only around 5% of the market operating in a structured, digital format. The vast majority of intercity bus travel continues to function through fragmented, offline channels, leaving a significant gap for technology driven platforms to step in and modernise the experience.
This is precisely the opportunity Uber and AbhiBus are positioning themselves to capture. By integrating bus ticketing directly within the Uber app, the partnership offers Indian travellers a seamless, one stop platform for planning and booking long distance journeys with ease and reliability.
India as a Global Innovation Hub
The partnership also underscores the growing strategic importance of India within Uber’s global operations. With over 2,500 engineers currently based in the country, India serves as one of Uber’s most critical technology and innovation centres. Uber’s Chief Technology Officer, Praveen Neppalli Naga, has noted that products and solutions developed by Indian teams are increasingly influencing the company’s worldwide direction and this bus ticketing initiative is a clear embodiment of that vision.

Infrastructure Driving Demand
Improved road infrastructure across India has significantly lowered the barriers to long distance travel. The rapid expansion of national highways and expressways has made intercity road journeys faster, safer, and more comfortable than ever before. This infrastructure growth, combined with rising digital adoption among Indian consumers, creates a compelling environment for a service like this to thrive.
Looking Ahead
With this partnership, Uber India has positioned itself as the most diverse mobility platform in its portfolio globally. As digital penetration deepens and consumer expectations evolve, the Uber-AbhiBus collaboration could well set the benchmark for how intercity travel is planned, booked, and experienced across India and potentially, the world.
